BROADWAY BREAKS RECORDS AND CONTINUES TO PACK THE HOUSE IN 2006 WITH NEW PRODUCTIONS

- Broadway Shines Bright With New Musicals, Dramas, Comedies and More-

Broadway closed out 2005 with its most successful year ever grossing more than $825 million and setting the stage for a spectacular 2006. With an abundance of new productions, from revivals of classic plays to blockbuster new musicals, New York City theater offers something for everyone this year.

“New York City is the entertainment capital of the world, in large part due to our city’s extraordinary theatrical community,” said Cristyne L. Nicholas, President and CEO of NYC & Company. “Visitors from around the world are experiencing Broadway at record numbers, and with highly anticipated revivals and new productions preparing to take the stage in 2006, we expect this growth to continue well into next year.”

According to the League of American Theatres and Producers, paid attendance for Broadway reached nearly 12 million in the 2004/05 season, the highest for any calendar year in the past two decades, and a 5.7 percent increase over 2004. Broadway saw 1.3 million foreign visitors in 2004/05 (11% of the Broadway audience), bringing tourism ticket sales back to pre-9/11 levels.

This season audiences and critics hailed the return of Broadway’s brightest stars: Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane took the stage in Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple; Patti LuPone joins Michael Cerveris in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Oprah Winfrey presents Alice Walker’s The Color Purple to Broadway and Jersey Boys features the music of doo-wop singer’s Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Broadway legend Phantom of the Opera celebrated its 7,486th performance on January 9, 2006, making it the longest running show in Broadway history.

The stage is set for a spectacular 2006 with electrifying new musicals. In February, Harry Connick, Jr. makes his Broadway theatrical debut in the eagerly awaited revival of The Pajama Game. In March, the songs of “The Man in Black,” country music legend Johnny Cash come to life in Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Musical Show. In April, legendary songwriters Elton John and Bernie Taupin take a bite out of the Big Apple with the production of Anne Rice’s Lestat and a star-studded cast will bow in the revival of Threepenny Opera. In May, Tarzan, Disney’s newest family sensation swings onto Broadway. Later in 2006, Mary Poppins will fly onto Broadway in a stage adaptation of the classic Disney film.

Patricia, Tu m'as convaincu !!
